Emmanuel Hatzofe

Curator: Maya Binkin

Opening: 17.06.2010

The Container presents a new exhibition featuring the works of renown Israeli sculptor Emmanuel Hatzofe; Keel. Using the old Jaffa port as a springboard, themes of space and place in time, play central roles in the exhibition. The port outside the space is reflected in the many boats and anchors inside; a reoccurring motif in Emmanuel's work.

Emmanuel was born and raised in Tel Aviv. Through his work as a naval captain he traversed the globe though always returned to his one true home. His life story details the story of Israel. A member of the Palmach, he also fought in the war of independence.

Emmanuel's studio can be found at the end of Jaffa port pier and is located in an old train carriage. Like a masonic alchemist lab, his studio is a treasure trove of sculpture. Inspired by his surroundings, Emmanuel produces stone sculptures in a technique that is slowly dying out. He uses a chisel and hammer to break out of solid pieces of Basalt, Granite and Marble his reduced and sensual shapes that border on the erotic.

Adam Baruch wrote, “his sculptures… are like an archaeological find; like a formation that has always been here, that was covered with sand and time until it disappeared, and has been unearthed and brought to light”.
